MALDIVIAN FOOD AND CHILLIES

Maldivian food is deeply influenced by Indian & Sri Lankan food, with an important use of chillies and spices in most of the dishes.

Hot and spicy Maldivian dishes are mainly made of smoked fish, coconut, lime juice, onion and chilli. It includes the delicious short eats such as Bajiya (filled with Maldivian smoked tuna), Kulhi Boakiba (cake made of fish), Masroshi (coconut dough stuffed with smoked tuna) or Gulha  (ball-shaped dumplings stuffed with a mixture of tuna)

You can also taste the Maldivian spicy cuisine by ordering a traditional Kekki Garudiya      (spicy fish broth) served with rice or simply ask for one of the numerous curry and especially the very spicy  Kulhi Riha (spicy fish curry).

If you are a chili lover, just try to eat the local way : pick a chili (usually provided in a separate plate) , and eat it raw along with your meal… Heat and burn guaranteed!

Although Maldivian cooking is milder than Sri Lankan and Indian cooking, the sensation of spiciness might be difficult to handle for those of you not used to hot and spicy savories.

Don’t worry, Chefs in Maldives do know that spicy food isn’t something very popular outside Asia and they will usually propose mild dishes for everyone’s taste.  Depending on your tolerance level for heat, you can always ask the chef to reduce or increase your meal spiciness.

HOW SPICY IS THE MALDIVIAN CHILI?

Githeyo mirus chilli ( also called Scotch bonnet Chilli) is a very spicy chilli found in great quantity in Carribean, Guyana and Maldives.

This chilli is one of the favourite chilli among chefs and chilli lovers. It has a very unique taste and is widely used in non vegetarian dishes and sauces.

Githeyo mirus is also named Scotch bonnet due to its resemblance to a tam o’ shanter hat

The main question is: How spicy is this Maldivian chili ?  Well , according to Scoville scale, Githeyo Mirus have a heat rating of 100,000 to 350,000 .

In comparison, a bell pepper is 0 and the very famous  bird’s eye chili (or Thai chili) is ranked 50,000 to 100,000 on the scoville scale.

Githeyo mirus ranking is far from the world’s hottest pepper “Trinidad Scorpion” (rate 1,500,000 – 2,000,000) . However Githeyo mirus is considered as one of the top 5 most spicy chili in the world!

If you’re a foodie, you must try the Maldivian Githeyo Mirus chili. This is the ultimate heat experience, stronger than a midday sun in Maldives !
